"Public education is my love and my passion," the teacher said. "We put the kids in charge, and they really do everything."

Students were broken into groups and work as editors, Web developers, writers and proofreaders.

"Kids who normally would be my quieter kids or kids who maybe weren't as excited about something, all the sudden they're up at the front of the class talking," Benedict said. "They're learning something in a different way, and they're actually taking a leadership role."

Zack Hubbard, 17, has written five articles for the Thunder Project.

"What we're doing with education is great," he said. "I think this project ... has changed my view on it a lot."

The Ahwatukee teenager said he has written about the benefits of music and physical education, expanded offerings of Chinese language courses across the country, and student community service.
